The trigger looks much simpler on this than other homemade ones I've seen...so the line runs down the wire and the line pulling on the end of the wire is what trips the trigger? I can't quite see it.

Yea look at the 2nd to last picture I posted. You want the wire hook to just barely hold the rod. It needs to be able to slip free very easily. It takes some tweaking but the more "hair trigger" you can get that bend, the more sensitive the thing will be. Once you get that right, any minor bumping of the trigger wire should release the rod.

Now just run the line over the end of the wire... fish gives a small tap, trigger wire moves slightly and the rod tip slips free and snaps up quickly, jerking the line.

I see, very cool. I'll probably be trying to make some in a week or two.

These are awesome. I'm going to make a few when I get home.

They work good. I need to build a couple more before we freeze up here. I cant believe ice fishing season is just around the corner. Picked up some new blades a few days ago just to get ready.

I was going to make a couple last year but never got around to it. Hopefully I'll get around to making a couple this year. Can't wait for the ice fishing season to start.

Yea, I just bought the last set of Auger blades at Cabelas... I'm still running the original blades it came with, now 15 years old at least. Should be quite a difference drilling this time around :D

What kind of auger do you use? I just bought a nils 6" last year and love it. Hoping the blades will last me another year (or a few) without needing sharpened.

An old Eskimo Gas auger, a Mako I believe... 8". I drain the gas and run it dry every spring. It always fires right up each fall. In 16 years I think the only thing I've had to fix on it is the gas cap cracked and we had to get a new one for a whopping $6. Its been great, I'd love a newer one but cant justify it until this one dies... if ever. I run my 2 strokes a little rich on the oil, seems to prevent alot of internal problems long term.

Nice, I didn't realize they made gas augers in 8" (never really looked). That seems like it would be a bit more manageable than a 10" or 12". I went with the hand auger because at the time I didn't have a snowmobile or atv. Now I do so I'll likely look into getting a gas auger over the next couple of years.
