Yeah, I think you're right. I had just figured the gas augers were bigger, but I never really looked into them. My first experience at Strawberry ice fishing was with an 8" eskimo hand auger in 30" of ice and that was pretty miserable.

ION electric augers look pretty sweet, but a replacement battery is super expensive. I'm watching others who have them to see what kind of life they are getting out of their setups. Not having premix gas / smoke is a huge plus.

Have you thought about doing an auger that you can hook up an electric drill to? Nils makes one with an attachment you can use with a drill, or you can use the hand crank. I seriously considered that before I bought mine.
