Winter Flies

My son is really getting into fly fishing when he's not snowboarding. Anyways he wanted me to ask what are some flies that produce in the winter. He's using I believe midges and Zebras and I haven't a clue what those are. So any words of wisdom one could pass along on types of flies for winter fishing?
