With my 12 year old boy able to hunt all 3 seasons this year, I dusted off my old Hawkin and we took it out for some shooting. It is shooting rediculously high for whatever reason. I screwed the rear sight down as far as it would go, and when sighting I am holding the front post as low as I can in the rear sight picture, but at 100 yards I still have to place the top edge of the front post just below where I want POI to be.
I can handle it just fine but I dunno about my boy... we'll practice a bunch more with it but its requiring a bit more careful aiming than I would like for a novice. This gun is a T/C Hawin from 1976, I rebarreled it with a Green Mountain Barrel kit almost 20 years ago (1/28" twist). The last time the gun was fired was when I loaned the barrel to Packout for a bull elk hunt he went on (shot a nice one!).
Maybe I should look into a higher front post? I dont see how I can get any lower profile on the rear but maybe there's an option out there.
