I got a sneak peak the other day........

At the new Savage chambered for the new 17 Winchester magnum rimfire. It is a totally new design. And they went with a light weight design. I think folks are going to be pleasantly surprised. I can't wait to shoot one.

This caliber is a headscratcher for me... I love the .17HMR, but this one, absolutely its a more powerful badder cartridge... but it kindof reminds me of a hammer looking for a nail. Is it really needed? I think a person is much better off going with a .17 Hornet which is much more established and reloadable than this latest offering, but who knows, its just another toy I guess.

It will be interesting to see long term how it fares in the market place. I think if they want a successul launch they need to have a TON of ammo available for it from day one, mighty tough in todays empty ammo shelf mentality.

Loke, where'd you get the opportunity to see the Bmag?

Dallan, I agree (mostly). But the biggest appeal that I can see to this cartridge is that it competes pretty well with the .17HMR's price point. For a couple bucks more, you get about 500 fps (along with a heavier bullet) more which I would think lots of guys would be interested in that don't reload for one reason or another. But I do agree that the .17 Hornet is much more appealing performance wise. And with handloading (assuming powder actually becomes available), I would suspect that the price of shooting the Hornet would be comparable to that of the WSM.
